Amazing June 3, 2008 Mrs. C. Henchman 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought one of these today, and I can safely conclude that this iPod has it all. It looks amazing for a start. I bought the silver one and it looks even better in reality than it does in the pictures - even the box is top notch! In terms of audio quality, I actually can't see what all the fuss is about relating to the iPod's new "lower quality" chip and headphones. I previously had a Sandisk Sansa e250, and the sound quality just doesn't compare - iPod is much better. Also, I have a pair of Sennheiser mx500 headphones, but I honestly can barely tell the difference in quality between them and the supplied headphones. I think people look for negatives in something too readily, and believe hype and hearsay without testing them for themselves. I also bought "Sonic The Hedgehog" to play on my iPod too. It looks great on the crisp screen, and surprisingly even the controls are good. Plus it was only 3.99 on iTunes. Trust me, for the capacity, audio quality, features and pure sexiness of this iPod, you wont feel you've been cheated out of your money.
Recommended - but then again, it's realistically the only large capacity player on the market...! May 27, 2008 marsho (S.Y., UK) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Ordered my 80gb ipod from Amazon in Jan and after a few months, feel able to review it without the "wow" factor of my first Apple product pushing my objectivity...! Previously, I owned a tiny 1gb Creative player - which was excellent value in comparison to the previous (circa 2005) Nanos. But after having to ruthlessly manage the content of the Creative, and being sick of having endless CD-Rs littering the inside of my car, a hatred of Radio 1, 2 & commercial stations and low boredom threshold, I got the 80gb ipod to make my 2hour round trip to work tolerable. And it has. But with some frustrations Pros - memory size. I've put 4000+ tracks on it, along with around 14 hours of film/dvd and it's only just half full. - style. You don't need to be told - you have eyes. It. Looks. Cool. - user interface. Forget "cover flow" - an unneccessary bit of fluff. Files & applications are structured in a logical flow & format Cons - having to use iTunes. Annoying. With my little Creative, you could just darg & drop, or use Creative's own software - very user friendly, very straightforward. The restriction to only manage your player's content via iTunes, to me, is intensely frustrating. Purely a mechanism to get you to buy emusic via Apple - don't! Use mp3fiesta.com (or equivalent) instead! Whole albums for 1/$2! Woo! - extras. Simply, aside from the crappy white headphones, there are no extras. No mains charger, no screen protector, nothing. After taking it out of the (beautiful) packaging and seeing the mirrored back, my first thought was "go & buy a decent cover" (I got a Belkin one) to offer some kind of protection to the screen & back cover. So far, so good. All in all, I'm really glad I bought my iPod - it's kept me entertained on my commute and on numerous flights & trains. Ultimately though, it was the only affordable, widely used large capacity player on the market. It would've been nice to have had to weigh up the pro's & con's of Apple vs Creative or Sony, but the choice just wasn't there. The iPod may still have come out on top as the best product, but it would have been nice to actually have made a choice.
Do not buy this iPod - Sound quality is awful!! May 15, 2008 W. P. Rushby (Southport) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
Having bought this I cannot believe how bad the sound quality is. Apple used to use a company called Wolfson for the sound chip. All there iPods from 2001 used the Wolfson chip. Now for some unknown reason (Probably cost) the Classics are using a chip by a company called Cirrus Logic and believe me it sounds really bad. It clips a lot, there seems to be no dynamic range to the sound at all and sounds appear fuzzy. A resent poll on an iPod forum found that over half thinks it sounds poor, over half! That's pretty bad for a 140 music player. Believe me I want to love it, everything about it shouts 'sexy', apart from (to me) the most important part - the sound. It cost me 160 from a high street retailer and they refuse to refund me, only exchange it, so now I've got a 160 paperweight sitting next to me as I refuse to use and listen to it. I intend to contact Apple about this and try to get a refund, but I feel I've been screwed over. You've been warned.
iPod Great, iTunes a shambles April 30, 2008 Tghu Verd 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, given Apple's twinning of iPod with iTunes, it's virtually impossible to review an iPod without being dragged into reviewing iTunes. That's a shame, because the 80Gb iPod Classic is great. There were only a few disappointments with it: 1) the disk drive makes it much heavier than I expected; 2) the screen is too glary; 3) the price does not include a cover or charger. Still, it's got scads of space, the battery life is good (don't get stung buying a power adaptor in an Apple store though...I needed one last minute so could not use Amazon. A hefty 19 later, I'm feeling both well equipped to travel, but slightly ripped off for paying retail) and it feels robust. Not sure how the gloss finish will hold up though. That's the good news... The bad news is iTunes. Think clunky user interface, unfamiliar - and not that obvious really - icons, lack of feedback on what it's doing (try importing an AVI file and just ignores you...no error, no warning, no suggestion it's a bad idea or that it will give iTunes indigestion...just nothing), etc etc... The worse news is the iTunes UK Store. Apple flog the iPod Classic on the back of video capability, but then let you down with their meagre selection of **EXPENSIVE** TV shows that you probably don't want to watch anyway. Where are the movies guys?? Why can't I buy from the US iTunes Store?? And did I mention that the content is so amazingly expensive?? Anyway, a better bet is to source your own content - perhaps from Graboid - and use a tool like the Jodix Free iPod Video Converter to make the MP4 files. Then you can actually use the iPod Classic to good effect...watching movies.
