I got this back in February for my birthday, after having spent three years with a little stick MP3 player. I had heard some negative things about iPods, but I decided to go with this one anyways since it was pretty competitively priced. I have not been disappointed yet. The interface is very user friendly and intuitive, and music is pretty easily transferred from your computer. The screen is sharp and sound quality is very good. Lots of other little extras on it to keep your thumbs busy if you're sitting around waiting for the bus or something. I have also been extremely impressed with both durability and battery life. I recently took it on a 4 week trip to Indonesia, and only had to charge it up about three times. It also managed to survive the trip loose in my backpack without a scratch or crack (I've also accidentally dropped it a few times and almost had a heart attack until I realised it was still playing music). The small size actually works very well, fits in the hand nicely and means I can slide it into the front pocket on my jeans when walking in to lectures. And it looks pretty sleek too!

Basically, I've been thrilled with the purchase and haven't regretted it at all. Really do recommend this for anyone looking to get a new MP3 player.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, fabulous piece of kit!   April 21, 2008

Due to some negative reviews, I had some concerns when I bought two of these for Christmas presents last year (one for my husband and one for him to give me!). All I can say is that based on our sample of two, its a great piece of kit. I really love my Ipod, so does hubby. Its exceeded our expectations (and I'm not that easy to please)!

My son saved up all his Christmas money to buy this and he has not been disappointed. He is 12 years old and the iPod is easy to use and my son enjoys using iTunes to download music, podcasts and video clips.

An excellent price on Amazon as we shopped around just about everywhere before finding this great price with free delivery.

I have never owned an ipod before but a friend of mine does and i was quite impressed with hers. I decided to get one myself recently mainly because of going away next month and wanting to take music with me. Personally the only downside for me is having to use itunes. I have never used itunes before and neither had my partner so we have spent a lot of time messing around with it. But i think if you are familiar with itunes you won't have a problem. I like the size of it as i was looking for something compact. It is about the size of a credit card and almost as thin. The price is good for what you get, i was always put off in the past from getting one because of the price. The sound quality is great and you can get quite a lot of music on there, i have 76 average length albums on there. The labelling of the music isn't perfect but personally isn't an issue at all. It also has the odd extras on it, i quite like the games, especially the quizzes which i had found strangely addictive.

All in all i think it is a great product

3 out of 5 stars OK but ...   April 9, 2008

I've had this for a few months - my first player of this type. The first thing you must do is to order some kind of holder for it, or your screen will be scratched too. I listen to mostly classical music and for this the device has a flaw common to all iPods and doubtless lots of other players. The database used to give titles to the albums, tracks and so on is hopelessly inconsistent, so you can't be confident about where to find stuff alphabetically - even two discs in the same boxed set can finish up miles apart - one under "Mozart Symphonies 40 & 41", the other under "W.A. Mozart - Symphonies 38 & 39." This can be fixed with iTunes but it ain't fun.

Others are right to say that the wheel is a bit too sensitive - especially when you're walking. The pictures of album covers are useless when playing tracks - they take up half the screen and as a result things like track title have to scroll across. When the track title says "Shostakovich - Symphony No. 16" before "1. Allegro", it's painful to watch. If many of your CDs are a few years old, cover flow is about 90% grey nothingness and hence a waste of time.

I damaged the original headphones but a Shure inner ear set for about 30 do a good job and increase the perceived volume.

Oh, and if you've got a few hundred CDs, you should spend the extra 30 or so for the 8Gb version.

I had one recent "iPod seems to be dead" experience, but Googling found a way to reset it which did work.
