 New soundcard producing superb repro with studio Hphones July 30, 2010

Functionality is well known, but less talked about is the superb sound quality that for me beats the so long more superior Sony systems.
I was rather cynical about the 'Genius' function but after 3 months I'm a convert. With a big big collection the Genius selections are doing a better job than my memory!
At 160GB the capacity issue is virtually eliminated - Photos, Podcasts, movies - loads and loads of space.
Solid build and Itunes resource makes it a nil brainner choice.
Do have a look at the competition - then order the Ipod!!!!
Try them with the famous Grado SR60i Phones - awesome.

There are plenty of reviews about the iPod in general so I won't do one of them. I had a previous iPod classic for 2ish years but it went wrong so I got a new one. My only concern when buying the new one was the iPod not being loud enough as many others have said this. I have no problems with the volume (I use Sennheiser CX 300 II Precision Noise Isolating Ear-canal Phones - Black which probably helps - would almost say it's necessary getting some decent in-ear earphones). Maybe other people are partly deaf or have rubbish earphones or their music file volume is really low but I have no problems with it!

I last bought a 160GB Ipod classic in 2008 (5th generation model) & was extremely happy with it until it went missing a while back. Placing my order recently I looked carefully at the new 9th generation Ipod 160GB (looking & hoping for improvements) to replace it with, reading what others have written regarding volume limitations etc & decided once again (this is my 5th Ipod!) to purchase, as no other MP3/MP4 on the market has the same capacity for holding your music collection.
The 148GB of free memory is yes, predictably misleading as we know; yet when I received my new Ipod I did a least expect some; any kind of improvements to the make or functionality of it, maybe additional features given that it's been over 3 years between 5th & 9th generations of this Ipod.... BUT it is very disapponting to report that the new Ipod seems in fact WORSE than my old one! How so? Well it is slimmer by a couple of MMs admittedly but the quality of the case in general appears poorer with Apple choosing to use an inferior quality of material for both steel caseback, front, phonejack socket & USB port no doubt to drive down costs & maximise profits.
So what exactly have Apple done to the 160GB classic? Well 4 generations later? (Really?) it's indistinguishable from it's predecessor & you have to ask WHY? Well the Touch & Iphones have advanced leaps & bounds & we now see the Ipad, so why have Apple been so lazy? Why don't we have a larger capacity after all these years of waiting? Well the answer seems to be that they're just too busy selling their range of touch phones on long profitable contracts & Ipads at £500 a throw to care! (Imagine a car or TV manufacture trying to sell the same models with no improvements for years on end? Wouldn't survive would they? Well Apple have the market cornered so why bother?)
The volume limit is something which Apple introduced voluntarily after the old men at the EU decided that all of us who love acoustic & classical music must still be doomed to listen to other peoples banal banter when on the bus or train! I tested the new Ipod with the TV volume on it's lowest setting & Ipod turned up full; I could still make out what was being said on TV from across the room (I'm using Sony Fontopia in-earphones also, not the obligatory useless white ones Apple STILL insist on supplying!). Should you try get around the volume limitations you'll find that by increasing track volume levels etc, you only get worse distortion, which in fact will hurt your eardrums & do more damage to your hearing! The distortions seem to come as a result of this unwelcome volume limitation & are not as a result of limitation in the source files which of course means that the actual quality of playback & clarity suffers badly, not only through headphones or earphones but through other methods of HIFI playback output too.
The actual functionality of the new Ipod is SLOWER than my old 5th generation Ipod, so slow in fact that I fear for how bad it actually will be by the time it's filled with music! Changing between tracks takes frustrating seconds to complete now & you can't help but wonder if the slimming down has caused this?
So the upshot is I'm stuck with it! Nobody else has the imagination to challenge Apple; whom are satisfied to let an excellent product line languish into an out of date mediocre one! If you are thinking of buying this model Ipod you may want to seriously reconsider before you shell out your hard earned money? After all it seems that many mobile phones companies are now offering the 160GB Ipod as a freebie incentive to sign up for a new 18 month phone contract.... Says it all really!

The iPod arrived quickly, and has been great. This is my first foray into the world of mp3s and I absolutely love it. It is very easy to use, the instructions and videos are very clear, and the sound reproduction is excellent. And it will hold my whole CD collection ... which is more than I could listen to in a year of walking to and from the office! Highly recommended.
