itrip July 26, 2010 David Owen (WALES U.K) A great bit of kit.
The iTrip will give you the best sound your radio or car radio and speekers are upto.
Poor performance July 19, 2010 I D H. (Basra) I bought one of these transmitters to replace a broken ( ie dropped) Kensington FM transmitter, which had worked well in terms of broadcasting to my car stereo, but the sound quality was not fantastic.
I would say that this product has 1 good point; when you get a strong signal from the device the sound quality is superb.
Problem is the smart scan function is terrible, typically locks onto a "spare" or quiet frequency of 88.1 or 88.5 which as some people may recognise are the main frequencies of BBC Radio 2 for the south of England. Hardly a spare channel.
Product has a "design feature" whereby if you plug it into an ipod or iphone it uses the battery even if you are not using it to play music, so for example, if you pause your ipod with the iTrip attached, it still consumes power and flattens the battery.
Product quality is also dubious- connector that plugs into iPhone is not tight, and can be easily knocked off the phone with light pressure, after 3 months the push buttons on the device to move a track up and down are almost worn out.
Oh and good luck getting the micro usb cable to work to charge through the device to power an iPhone, have tried 7 ,yes 7 different cables and not one worked.
Will NOT be buying a Griffin product like this again. Not worth the money. Will throw mine away soon when i have worked out what to replace it with.
Griffin trip transmitter July 17, 2010 A. M. P. Berry (UK) Found this item quite easy to use with my i.pod. The only draw back I found on long journeys I had to change the network several times from other radio network interferences.
Griffin - iTrip June 28, 2010 EmmPen Well I read all the reviews before I bought this and decided, on balance, it would probably be ok. I use this with both a 3rd Gen Touch and a 1st gen Nano and it works great with both. Luckily I live in Somerset, so there is some available FM bandwidth and generally I can stick to the same frequency for all my journeys. The presets are useful for when I venture a little further afield. I had a Belkin tunecast before and that worked well also apart from it ate AAA batteries (I lost the DC adapter) hence the reason I upgraded to this as it uses the iPod's battery for power. Only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is due to the slightly inflated price. Amazon (at the time of writing this) was the cheapest supplier by a fair margin. If you want a simple Car - iPod solution and dont live in a hugely built up area then this is for you. Agree with the other comments about the app....waste of time and not required.
Works but poor design June 11, 2010 M. Jeffery (Norwich, UK) I don't usually write reviews but I thought that my experiences were worth sharing on this occasion. The Griffin itrip for iphone/itouch does work but it has a number of flaws that buyers should be aware of - these begin to add up and all-in-all mean that I would not recommend it.
Construction: the unit is nowhere near as solid feeling as your phone and the front is prone to scuffs. No big deal but the real problem is that the itrip only has four of the six fixings that keep an Apple charging cable in place, and as a result it is liable to move laterally out of place. Of course the music then stops but the result is also that your iphone also pauses and then needs to be set off again from the either the itrip or the phone itself. This happens frequently enough in normal use to make it not only irritating but potentially dangerous too as you fumble with the buttons.
Function: I use the itrip for long car journeys, but as the itrip makes use of the unused parts of the FM bandwidth to broadcast its own signal, a long journey inevitably means re-tuning both itrip and radio at intervals. Again this is a distraction from the road ahead and could be dangerous. But unfortunately the scanning function on the itrip isn't always that accurate and often selects a frequency adjacent to strong signal. The result on my car radio (Fiat Panda Eco) is that there is annoying interference. You might get used to re-tuning but it is rare that you can drive for more than 30 minutes without switching channels.
Ease of use: the itrip display is small and difficult to read when driving, the iphone app is more visible but just try unlocking your phone or even tapping when driving! Some reviews refer to the RDS track function - this works sometimes on my car radio but mostly fails.
The itrip does work and may work better in a different car and won't need constant re-tuning if you don't travel far - but next time I'll look elsewhere for a better solution - in the meantime I'm struggling with a gadget that doesn't really work in real world conditions.
