Brilliant piece of hardware! July 23, 2010 StevieD Having used various iPOD devices for many years I wanted to upgrade to a newer version for more space and as a gift. I bought this for my husband and it has already proved to be his most popular "toy". Hours of amusement, plenty of apps already downloaded as well as his music/films etc. I may well end up with one myself as he won't let me try his...
I love my iPod touch July 12, 2010 CDC Having used the iPhone (which was stolen), I opted for the iPod touch. This serves me better than the iPhone which I couldn't get on with as a phone, as I could rarely get a signal when I wanted it. I can do most things with my iPod touch as with the iPhone (except receive and make calls of course). I am happier now with my iPod touch and a separate basic mobile.
Speedy delivery, can't fault the product! July 10, 2010 M. Mckenzie (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) I'll keep it short since there's more comprehensive reviews out there! Delivery was less than 24 hours after order which was free, easy to set up etc. Would recommend ordering a case + screen protector(s) when you order this as you will need them at the same time.
Great gadget but iTunes is awful July 6, 2010 Zoltan (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is probably the best gadget I have ever owned. Despite the small size, the web browser is surprisingly usable - more so than a netbook that I own because of the zoom facilities. There are all sorts of cool apps. As a bit of a geek, I have a ssh client installed that allows me to log into my Linux server. I also have an app called iPeng that allows me to control my Logitech Squeezeboxes.
So all very cool but why only 3 stars? Well, I bought the 64 GB model as I have a large mp3 collection and I wanted to use the Touch as my primary mp3 player as well as doing all the other cool stuff with it. Now I knew before purchase that I would have to use iTunes and I wasn't expecting to love it as I am used to using mass-storage mp3 players and simply dragging my music to my player. However, I was unprepared for quite how bad it is. Apart from it being a generally unpleasant piece of software to use, there are two significant problems that I have encountered:
First, apps appear to get randomly deleted when I sync. I have purchased all my apps directly from App Store via the Touch itself, and I am happy to continue doing that. However, for some reason, despite checking everything I could to tell iTunes not to sync apps, it has deleted one or more of them on more than one occasion. I know I can re-download them without paying again but it's annoying and it should not be deciding to delete stuff on my behalf without confirming it with me. Incidentally one of the apps was a game that remembers the level one has got to, so even though I could download it again, I still had to start from scratch with it.
Second, music takes *ages* to transfer. Most of the time seems to be spent in a step where iTunes analyses tracks for gapless playback. Now gapless is a feature that is very important to me. I installed Rockbox on my previous mp3 player specifically to get gapless playback. Most manufacturers don't seem to care about it so I had thought at least this was one thing Apple had got right. However, they have clearly made a pig's ear of implementing it.
I have seen comments on other reviews that say that it is unfair to mark down the Touch because of iTunes. I disagree very strongly with this viewpoint. The fact is that I am pretty much forced to use iTunes. As such it is an integral part of the product and deserves to be reviewed as such. Note that I *am* aware of 3rd part alternatives to iTunes such as CopyTransManager but that does not do gapless properly.
In summary, it's a great gadget for the non-music related stuff but too much hassle to use as a decent mp3 player for a large collection.
A great buy! June 27, 2010 Dr. William Armstrong (everywhere) I had a 8gb ipod touch but it broke after 4 years so I bought a 64gb one and i must say it is great! It is large enough to store all my music and apps. I toaly recomend you buy this item (also get some kind of case because they do scrach easy and that lowers value a huge amount).
Apple spent millions on devoloping the iphone and then just put all the softwear from that right into the ipod touch, so you are getting great value for your money.
Buy this today you wont regret it!
